Killing Eve’s Characters

Psychopathy is a personality disorder where a person doesn’t have the ability to show empathy to others. It makes them can do bad things without feeling sorry for the victim. There are lots of well-known psychopath characters that adapted on television or in movies such as Villanelle from Killing Eve.

Villanelle in Killing Eve Season 2

The exact cause of someone experiencing psychopathy disorder is still not known. But some researchers say that this can be congenital, the influence of the closest people and upbringing since childhood. Here we have several people who get close to Villanelle and can be the cause of her psychopathy disorder:

Tatiana Astankova

Villanelle’s mother, Tatiana (yellow dress)

Her psychopathy disorder caused starts with Villanelle having a mother issue with her biological mother, Tatiana Astankova. She rejected and abandoned her. Villanelle asks for her mother’s acceptance but she refused her. Tatiana wants to be the one who is loved in her house but her husband favorite Villanelle more. It also seems that Tatiana had baby blues syndrome and left her at the orphanage because she couldn’t stand Villanelle.

This abandonment and abusive behavior not only happen to Villanelle only but to the other kids that she has, Bor’ka and Pyotr. She treated them badly like punishing Bor’ka when he didn’t win in a cooking competition. She told him that he is a failure and an embarrassment. It impacts him to do self-harm (hitting his own head). Tatiana lied to Pyotr about Villanelle’s death after the fire incident in the orphanage.

Anna Aanmokoba

Eve (left) and Anna (right) in Killing Eve Season 1

Anna Aanmokoba is a Rusian teacher who taught Villanelle. When everyone turned around from Villanelle because she was a bad student Anna was there to give her extra attention. Anna sees something in Villanelle, she is different from other students.

“So intelligent and funny and rude”

The closeness between Anna and Villanelle triggered V’s Oedipus Complex. Anna’s role should only be a supporting role in school but she gave V’s more than that. Anna praised and encourage Villanelle. She gave her the comfort that Tatiana never gave. They crossed the line and end up becoming lovers because at that time Villanelle was still a minor. At the same time, Anna has a husband, Maxi Leonova. Villanelle felt jealous that their relationship was hindered by him. He then gets castrated out of jealousy by Villanelle. The murder made Anna disappointed in Villanelle, she then threw her in jail.

Dasha Duzran

Dasha Duzran, The Twelve’s assassin trainer

Dasha Duzran is a Rusian assassin trainer and a high-ranking worker for The Twelve. She got hired by The Twelve after killing her boyfriend in the locker room after being driven by her anger because of her coach's constant criticism. The Twelve recruited her because of her unusual method of killing, slamming her boyfriend’s dead body into the cupboard and covering his face with chalk.

She mentored Villanelle before she become a “big deal in the industry”. She is a tough and cynical woman. Trained Villanelle to be a top-tier assassin, at the same time she also compliments her and gives her affection like a mother figure to allure Villanelle so she will follow Dasha’s rules.

“You are destined for the greatness”

In the end, Dasha betrayed Villanelle. All of her promises are just a trick so she can return to Russia. The betrayal triggered Villanelle’s abandonment issue, Dasha ended up getting killed by Villanelle. Villanelle hit her head during their disguise mission as child and mother.

Konstantin Vasiliev

Konstantin in Killing Eve

Konstantin Vasiliev is a member of The Twelve. His job is a handler of Villanelle. The closeness between Villanelle and Konstantin was initially only limited to handlers and assassins. He get close to her because they have to work together often time and he is like a father figure for Villanelle. At the first time they work together, Konstantin doesn’t believe Villanelle and hide anything related to his private life until Villanelle found out that he has a daughter.

The betrayal between Konstantin and Villanelle starts when he chose his family over Villanelle.

“We are friends, but not a family”

Konstantin uses Villanelle only as a killing machine and doesn’t see her as a human, just like Dasha only in a different way. In the end he realized that what he was doing was wrong. They both make up.

Eve Polastri

Eve Polastri in Killing Eve Season 2

Eve Polastri is a former member of the secret intelligence service, MI6. She works under the supervisor of Carolyn Martens. The murder of Eve’s best friend, Bill, is the beginning of a crazy relationship between her and Villanelle.

Eve is considered more special than others. Eve is different from other causes. She’s Villanelle's other half. She is her reflection. Unlike, V’s mother who rejected her darkness, Eve acknowledges it. It makes Villanelle not feel alone, she realizes that she has someone else but sadly that only happens for a short period of time. Even though Eve acknowledges her, she still cannot deal with the darkness. Once again, Villanelle gets betrayed by someone that close to her.

“This is not what I wanted”

Upset by Eve’s rejection, Villanelle decides to shoot her. Villanelle was clumsy, she didn’t check if Eve was dead. Luckily the shot didn’t kill Eve. She is still alive with a gunshot wound on her back.

Just as Villanelle thought, she is a psychopath from birth and is exacerbated by the people closest to her who further hone her psychopathic spirit. She is trying to change. Have a life like normal people. Have someone to watch a movie with.
